According to the p. 232 of the book, there are two different waves that led to the rise of the new media. The authors noted that “The term became popular in the 1990s to describe changes dating from the 1980s, and the first wave included video, new ways of delivering television (via cable satellite, direct broadcasting by satellite/DBS) on a subscription basis (pay television), CD-ROMs, various forms of multimedia, advanced facsimile machines, handheld databanks, electronic books, and videotext networks” (p. 232).
